Million Pillowcase Challenge

Make A Pillowcase, Make A Difference.

The Fabric Garden is proudly participating in
American Patchwork & Quilting's One Million Pillowcase Challenge!

Beginning November 15, and throughout the coming year, we challenge and encourage you to make as many pillowcases as you can for those who would be comforted by a nice, home-sewn pillowcase.

We are an official drop-off spot, and will be dividing the pillowcases received amongst local organizations and agencies. A homemade pillowcase can provide comfort for a cancer patient, hope for a foster child, encouragement for a battered woman, beauty for a nursing home resident, a bit of thanks for those in our VA hospitals, and so on...

Each time we receive a pillowcase, we will log it into the rolling counter online at allpeoplequilt.com/millionpillowcases. If you wish to make pillowcases and donate them locally yourself, you may do so and log them in yourself at that site. But we hope to see many pillowcases come through our doors at The Fabric Garden - we want to fill the pillowcase box often!

We'll be hosting fun pillowcase events throughout the year, starting with a FREE Pillowcase Demo in December (date to be announced), and a Pizza Pillowcase Party in early 2010!

Let's get together with the rest of the country to make a million pillowcases, and make a difference in a million people's lives.

Operation Helmet Liner

How would you like to utilize your knitting skills to help our troops?

We currently have more than 200,000 troops overseas, where they are subjected to sub-zero wind chills during the winter and extreme heat in the summer. Afghanistan's winters can be brutal, and a wool helmet liner provides much-needed comfort. Wool retains body heat, and unlike other fibers it is inherently self-extinguishable, which is important in the even of an accident.

There are some specific guidelines to follow.
A free pattern is available, below

The liner must be made of wool.
Cascade 220 or Galway Worsted are good choices. No other fiber than wool will be accepted by the military. Helmet liners made of synthetic fibers cannot be worn in combat areas, and pose a melting hazard in the event of fire or accident.

Only specific colors are accepted by the military:
Black (preferred)
Charcoal
Brown
Gray
Tan - as long as it is DARK
(no other colors can be accepted)

The Fabric Garden is accepting helmet liners for shipment overseas. Please attach the label from your yarn to the liner to assure the military that 100% wool was utilized in making the liner.

Project Linus

Become a “Blanketeer”

Project Linus volunteers, known as “blanketeers,” provide new, handmade, washable blankets to be given as gifts to seriously ill and traumatized children, ages 0-18. It is Project Linus’ policy to accept blankets of all sizes, depending on local chapter needs. All blanket styles are welcome, including quilts, tied comforters, fleece blankets, crocheted or knitted afghans, and receiving blankets in child-friendly colors. Always remember that blankets must be homemade, washable, free of pins, and come from smoke-free environments due to allergy reasons.

The Fabric Garden is honored to be an official drop-off point for Project Linus Blankets.
